At the August Board of Education meeting, John M. Dobby, Director of Occupational Health & Safety Services for Conibear & Associates LTD presented the results of an air quality study.
About a month ago I sent an email update on a study commissioned by the Board of Education to look into the safety of our schools. At that time, I had mentioned that two separate but related studies were being conducted to assess the environmental conditions of our Elementary School. The first was a study conducted by Dr. Conibear and the results were shared in an email on July 16th (attached) that determined that the school environment was not the cause of the incidences of cancer in staff members.
At last night’s Board of Education meeting, Mr. John Dobby of Carnow, Conibear, & Associates provided a report to the Board on the second study, which focused on environmental conditions at the school. Mr. Dobby’s study included an extensive visual inspection of classrooms and the ventilation systems within our school as well as measurements of numerous indoor air quality parameters and mold. This extensive study found that there are no environmental factors impacting the health or well-being of our staff or students. This news comes as a relief, and we are fortunate that the building has been deemed safe by environmental experts. I have also attached a copy of Mr. Dobby’s report for your review.
With that said, we will continue to be responsive to staff concerns about the cleanliness and maintenance of our schools. Over the course of the summer, the Elementary building had asbestos abated from the floor of four classrooms in the first-grade wing. I am happy to say that our building is now asbestos-free. Additionally, in response to staff concerns about dirty or aging carpets, we have replaced all classroom carpet with tile. Tile is aesthetically pleasing and easier to clean and maintain, and more allergy-friendly. We know this will have a positive impact on our school’s environment. Finally, we are also putting internal controls in place to ensure that maintenance concerns are dealt with in a timely manner. It is our goal to maintain safe and clean schools in which our students learn and our teachers teach. To that end, we will be working with our maintenance team to continue to ensure high standards of cleanliness.
Please join me in a collective sigh of relief that our schools are safe, and please hold me accountable to continue to improve our learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.
