Resources:
- Student Copy Machine: There is a Canon copier available specifically for student use. This enables students to make free copies of reference materials they may need for research and study at home.
- Computers: There are 5 student computers located in the library that students may use for graphic programs, word processing, database/spreadsheet and more. There is one color printer located in the library and there are three printers located in the computer lab that students can access from library computers so there should be no waiting for copies. Printing on these machines is free to students. However, we ask that they do not print directly off the Internet due to the drain on colored ink. Students are taught to copy and paste the text of the Internet site onto a Word document and print it from Word.
- Video Display: The library has one 32-inch television with a VCR/DVD player and computer attachment. This allows students to view video programs for classes or display student work prepared on computer presentation programs.
- Project Center: Because the IMC is a multi-purpose facility, students are able to find much more than books here. There is a cabinet that houses construction paper, rulers, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, highlighters, staplers, tape, and paper cutting boards. This allows for student products that range in creativity and modality. These materials are provided free to the student body and the supply is constantly replenished.
- Flex Computer Lab: The IMC is directly connected to the large Flex-Lab where there are 24 computers loaded with educational programs and utilities, 3 color printers, and one scanner. The teaching staff may reserve the lab for their entire class for instruction, split their class for small group instruction or send students down on an as-need basis. The classroom teacher or Mrs. Stelter staff classes held in the lab.
- Mobile Lab: The middle school has a wireless mobile lab consisting of 30 laptop computers and 1 color printer. These computers are loaded with educational programs and Microsoft Office Utilities. The teaching staff may reserve the lab for their entire class or small group instruction.
- Card Catalog: The card catalog is computerized and on each of the 5 computers in the IMC as well as every computer in the building. Students can search and print bibliographies for the subjects they are interested in. Because we have loaded the card catalog on all the computers in each classroom, students may also search the card catalog without actually coming into the IMC. This allows students to make sure there is enough information available on a topic before choosing it for a project. It also enables teachers to check availability and quantities of books needed for curriculum enhancement.
Borrowing Procedures
Students at Pleasantdale Middle School are allowed to have up to three books checked out at a time, and they are given a two-week period before the books are due back.
Hours and Scheduling
The IMC is open during recreation periods every day for students to work on assignments, renew, return, or checkout books.
The IMC and Computer Lab have a flexible schedule. Though there are a few classes that are permanently scheduled, most periods are available. Classes are scheduled in the Lab and IMC by staff as often as needed for book selection, research, project completion, and special presentations.
Because of the different middle school student needs, their novel lengths, and diverse curriculum issues, a library that serves them can not be rigid in it’s scheduling. It must be more flexible to handle those demands. As always, Language Arts teachers bring their classes for book selection every two to three weeks depending on book report due dates. Any subject area teacher may have a need to schedule their class in the IMC for book selection, research, project development, and special speaker presentations. Therefore, a parent may find that one week their middle school child was in the IMC three times and the next week he or she was not in the IMC at all.
Open IMC (After School Hours):
The IMC is open after school from 3:20-4:20 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for homework completion, research and book selection. Students will be able to take the late bus home at 4:30 p.m.
