     If no formal homework assignment is given in class, students are still required to read for thirty minutes each night, write in their writer's notebook, and practice using vocabulary words covered in composition

COMPOSITION
Goals: (What we learn)
VOCABULARY
         Acquire and use new vocabulary words in speaking and writing. Also, be able
        to analyze the meaning of words and phrases in context.
WRITING (Using 6+1 writing process)
          Write compositions that contain complete sentences and effective paragraphs
        which include a variety of sentence types.
          Use correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling on final copies.
          Use the writing process to compose papers of various types for different
        audiences. (narrative, expository, and persuasive writing).
RESEARCH
           Locate, assess, and communicate information on a chosen topic.
SPEAKING
           Demonstrate good speaking behaviors in front of a group that include:
         appropriate volume, good posture, use of standard English, and appropriate
          gesture and movement
LISTENING
             Demonstrate good listening behaviors (eye contact, appropriate response,
           recalling information) as well as following directions.
 
MASTERY STATEMENTS AND OUTCOMES
LA.6.3.   Students will use the writing process to create multi-paragraph narrative and persuasive pieces and evaluate them using the 6-Traits of Writing.
LA.6.3.1.   Write a piece expressing an opinion about a single topic that is supported by facts.
LA.6.3.2.   Write pieces that demonstrate word choice at the established level on the 6-Traits rubric.
LA.6.3.3.   Write pieces in which the perfect tense of regular and irregular verbs is used correctly.                            
LA.6.3.4.   Write pieces in which interrogative and demonstrative pronouns are used correctly.
LA.6.3.5.   Write pieces which demonstrate correct subject verb agreement when there is an intervening prepositional phrase or a compound subject joined by a conjunction.
LA.6.3.6.   Write pieces in which direct and indirect objects are used correctly.
LA.6.3.7. Write pieces in which transitive and intransitive verbs are used correctly.                    
LA.6.4.   Students will demonstrate sixth grade conventions in original  writing.
LA.6.4.1.  Demonstrate correct capitalization of : races, religions, cardinal directions, familiar relationships, school subjects, seasons, geographical regions, nationalities and the first line of a poem.
LA.6.4.2.   Demonstrate correct use of commas to set off introductory words.
LA.6.4.3.   Demonstrate correct use of a comma in direct address.
LA.6.4.4.   Demonstrate correct use of hyphens to divide words at the end of a line.
LA.6.4.5.   Demonstrate correct use of dashes to show change in thought or to show that the speaker is interrupted.
 
LA.6.5.  Students will construct and execute a basic research plan and share their results in a multi-paragraph persuasive or narrative piece.
                LA.6.5.1.   Formulate questions on their chosen topic.
                LA.6.5.2.   Organize their information using a graphic organizer.
                                LA.6.5.3.   Cite their sources using the bibliographic format recommended by Lyons Township High School.
LA.6.6.   Students will integrate 6th grade appropriate vocabulary through the use of context clues and analysis of word structure.
 
LA.6.6.1.   Determine the meaning of words or phrases using context clues (such as definitions, restatements, examples, description, and clue words) in sentences or paragraphs.
 LA.6.6.2.   Determine the meaning of words through knowledge of word structure including root-words, prefixes and suffixes (see Appendix ).
 
             LA.6.7.   Students will display good speaking and listening behaviors and use
            language specific for prepared presentations.
 
                              LA.6.7.1.   Respond appropriately to oral presentations.
                              LA.6.7.2.   Attend to a speaker with courtesy and respect.
                              LA.6.7.3.   Follow oral instructions accurately.

COMPOSITION
 
     Students are graded using an average of total points earned in a trimester.  Homework assignments, participation, and classroom acitivities vary in point value from five to twenty points.  Quizzes and tests are valued from fifty to one hundred points.  Please keep track of your progress using Skyward. 
For Composition
                 ·         Come prepared to class each day.
·         Try your hardest.
·         Complete all classwork/projects/tests with hard work and on time.
·         Never think “I can’t.” I believe you can!
·         Ask questions if you need help.  I am here to help you be successful.
·         Follow the classroom rules- The "5 Be"s: Be Prepared, Be Prompt, Be Respectful, Be Productive, and Be Positive!
 
              Ms. Acanfora has been a teacher for eleven years, teaching English and social studies for grades six and eight, and even taught third grade in Chicago.  She has a bachlor's degree in elementary education and English from Saint Xavier University and a masters degree in school leadership from Concordia University.  In her free time she enjoys spending time reading, listening to live music, playing games with her boyfriend and her mom, and taking her two dogs out for walks in Tinley Park.  She loves teaching and can't imagine having a better job than working with children.
