Parents will often ask me when it is a good time for children to take private lessons on an instrument. The appropriate age does depend on the individual child’s potential and desire. Children will typically start piano lessons as young as first or second grade. Though I cannot advertise specific teachers here, I do suggest young instrumentalists begin learning piano. Piano is considered to be the universal instrument and if they can play piano they can then play any other instrument they choose.

Your child may have the desire to start on guitar instead. I do not suggest this unless the guitar lesson are flamenco or classical in genre. There the student will learn to read music, count rhythms and good technique.
