Mastery Outcomes
Mastery outcomes aligned with the District mission and strategic objectives have been carefully articulated for each grade level and all subject areas. These outcomes and corresponding components provide a detailed description of the knowledge and skills expected of all students. The Pleasantdale curriculum is designed to be challenging and exceed State standards. Emphasis is placed on assuring that all students attain proficiency in all subjects. Students are further challenged to apply problem solving and higher order thinking skills to the learning process.
Below the mastery outcomes and corresponding components are listed for each subject and grade level. Parents are encouraged to contact classroom teachers for further information.
Art (updated 2011)
The purpose of teaching art is to foster perceptual awareness, creativity, self-expression, aesthetic literacy, problem solving and critical thinking skills. The study of art also promotes self-esteem, self-awareness, and an understanding of past and present cultures.
Health (updated 2011)
Health mastery outcomes for grades K-5 can be found with Science.
Language arts is the integration of listening, speaking, viewing, writing, and reading to create meaning.
The purpose of language arts is to empower students to internalize and interpret the world around them and effectively communicate with others.
Language arts is taught by:
• using multiple, research-based instructional approaches to address individual readiness, interest, and learning styles.
• using or viewing meaningful literature and media selections for analysis, critique, and interpretation.
• developing reading strategies through read alouds, guided reading, independent reading, and interpretive discussion.
• providing opportunities for informal writing experiences to increase fluency, generate new ideas, and express voice.
• providing opportunities for formal writing experiences that demonstrate effective interpretation and communication.
• providing speaking, writing, and viewing opportunities for varying purposes and audiences.
• providing opportunities to develop questions, pursue, organize and share information.

Mathematics is the study of the relationships among numbers, quantities, measurements, and spatial configurations. This study encompasses a broad understanding of number sense, operations, estimation, geometry, and data interpretation.
The purpose of teaching mathematics is to empower all students with the ability to formulate, analyze, and solve problems in order to excel in the real world.
Mathematics is taught by using
• a challenging, cohesive, spiraled curriculum.
• a balanced procedural and conceptual approach.
• connections between mathematics and real-world applications.
• technology as a tool to enhance mathematical concepts.

Music education is the study and practice of organized sound and silence used to express and elicit human emotion. Music education students gradually build musical, cultural and cross curricular literacy while developing intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity through musical forms of expression and communication.
Students will:
- explore, practice, and develop musical skills through singing, dancing, or playing an instrument.
- enhance their social and emotional well-being.
- build self-confidence.
- participate in experiences that transcend culture and history.
General Music
8th Grade does not take general music.
Instrumental Music
Physical Education is the study and practice of movement and its relation to one’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being.
The purpose of teaching physical education is to empower students to make responsible decisions for a healthy lifestyle.
Physical education is taught by creating a learning environment which:
• Challenges students to explore, practice, and improve physical movement skills.
• Allows students to practice safe and age-appropriate fitness activities and to understand lifetime fitness principles.
• Provides opportunities for social interaction and personal decision-making.
• Incorporates research based best practice resources.
• Utilizes on going assessments to enhance learning.
• Promotes emotional and physical safety.
• Involves available partnerships in the community.

The purpose of teaching science is to empower students to investigate and apply the principles of scientific reason and its implications in order to enhance their natural curiosity, promote problem solving abilities, higher-level thinking skills, and make appropriate lifelong health choices.
Social science is the study of people, events, and ideas that have shaped our global community. This encompasses a broad understanding of history, geography, political science, economics and the social sciences.
The purpose of teaching social science is to develop an educated, compassionate, and enlightened citizenship. Students will use their knowledge and critical thinking skills to make informed and responsible decisions in life pursuits.
Social science is taught through:
• analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating sources of information.
• making personal connections with major concepts and ideas.
• forming and supporting opinions based on information learned.
Spanish (updated 2011)
Spanish is the study of communication and cultures through listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The student will attain the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to actively participate in culturally diverse communities.
Spanish is taught through:
• early, continuous, child-centered activities.
• interactive, communicative scenarios.
• authentic assessments pertaining to real-life situations.
• a spiraling scope and sequence of the language skills and concepts.
Technology education is the application of technological learning tools to extend human capabilities to process information and solve problems.
The purpose of teaching technology is to empower students to use technology to facilitate the efficiency and depth of the learning process and to enhance their academic and social skills.
Technology is taught through:
• integrating subject areas to advance authentic learning.
• searching, accessing and evaluating information.
• learning and applying technology specific skills.
• using technology instinctively as a problem solving tool.
• communicating effectively.
• encouraging creativity and passion.
Elementary Skills and Concepts
Technology skills at the elementary school are taught in the computer lab by the classroom teacher. The teachers integrate this instructional time with classroom lessons and activities to create technology-rich opportunities for learning.
